Mobilitätsbefragung Würzburg 2023: Barriers, potentials and proposed solutions for sustainable mobility
05/07/2025On April 28, 2025, Prof. Dr. Christiane Gross and Micha Pastuschka were invited to the PUMA (Planning, Environment and Mobility Committee) meeting of the City of Würzburg to present their research results on the barriers, potentials and proposed solutions for sustainable mobility in Würzburg.
This presentation marked the successful conclusion of the follow-up project to the “Mobilitätsbefragung Würzburg 2023” (MbWue23). In addition to the presentation of the results, a detailed report and other project results were also handed over to the cooperation partners at the City of Würzburg.
As part of the “Mobilitätsbefragung 2023”, the Chair of Quantitative Methods of Empirical Social Research conducted a representative survey of 8,000 Würzburg households in cooperation with representatives of the city of Würzburg. By the end of the survey (early 2024), the data from 2,944 households, 6,372 individuals and 15,675 trips (adjusted response rate: 38.6 %) had been analyzed and published in a basic evaluation. This basic evaluation primarily related to the most important key data on mobility in Würzburg and the preparation of the data for subsequent use in academic research and public planning.
The successful cooperation between the city and the university was continued in order to obtain more in-depth information about the opinions and mobility behavior of citizens. In the project “Barriers, potentials and proposed solutions for sustainable mobility in Würzburg”, not only were in-depth quantitative analyses carried out, but the numerous qualitative comments from citizens were also considered.
Written comments were found on over 40% of the returned questionnaires, with the raw material comprising approximately 120 pages of text. In order to extract the most important statements from the respondents, all results were coded and analyzed using a mixed-methods design. The result is a detailed report in which various detailed questions on mobility in Würzburg are addressed. The City of Würzburg was also provided with additional evaluations, further quantitative data and compilations of the written comments. The data set itself is available for further use in research and teaching under the FAIR principles at the GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences.
With the end of the second cooperation project, the project team would like to thank the City of Würzburg for the fruitful collaboration. Thanks again to the respondents who took part in the survey in spring 2023. Information on the survey and the key reports are available for download on the project website.
The project is part of the nachhaltig.mobil.planen. funding program of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). The accompanying measure for the creation of the mobility plan was subsidized by the BMDV at 65%. (Funding code: 16NMP10011)
