Foundation of the Forum Sustainability

10/18/2022

Offering a place for reflection on current questions of sustainability and opportunities for joint work on projects on socio-ecological transformation processes: This is what the Sustainability Forum at the Institute of Political Science and Sociology aims to do. It will be opened with a kick-off workshop on 11 November 2022.

The “Forum Nachhaltigkeit” at the Institute of Political Science and Sociology is dedicated to inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability research. It serves as a platform for reflection on current theoretical and empirical questions related to the governance of sustainability and offers opportunities for joint work on socio-ecological transformation processes.

Transformation processes according to the 17 global sustainability goals confront complex societies with increasing problems that reveal: It is not enough to study climate change and the multiple crises that accompany it - such as biodiversity crises, humanitarian crises or energy crises - as a purely technical issue or question for the natural sciences. For these transformations are above all also a socio-political challenge. Social science research approaches are therefore needed. We would like to discuss and further develop such new approaches in the “Forum Nachhaltigkeit”.

Exchange of ideas and research

Under the umbrella of the “Forum Nachhaltigkeit”, disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects are brought together, conferences and lectures are held, and publications are produced. Members of the Institute as well as the international scientific community and interested members of the public are invited to join these activities.

For the first year, the Sustainability Forum will focus on identifying challenges, forward-looking research questions and practical links of inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability research. The aim is to develop a common understanding of the contribution that social science sustainability research can make to understanding climate change and sustainability.

Anyone who already has ideas for further topics, events, projects, or approaches to linking sustainability research and teaching is welcome to present them at the opening workshop. For this purpose, the “Forum Nachhaltigkeit” asks for registration by e-mail (sowina@uni-wuerzburg.de). Jun.-Prof. Dr. Ulrike Zeigermann will be available for questions and further information.
