Civil Society in Transformation

03/06/2024

Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Lauth hat im Rahmen seiner Forschungskooperation am 19. Februar 2024 einen Vortrag an der Universität Federal do Rio Grande (UFRGS) am Departamento de Ciência Política in Porto Alegre (Brasilien) gehalten.

Das Thema seines Vortrags lautete: "Different Settings of Civil Societies and their Consequences: Civil Society Activities and Organizations in democratic and autocratic States".

Abstract

Especially during the Arab Spring, civil society was seen as the main hope for democratic transition. This hope was also based on the experience of democratization in Central Eastern Europe since 1989, in which civil societies such as those in Poland and the Baltic states played a significant role. How has civil society, however, contributed to the various transitions to democracy and how has it evolved in the newly democratic countries? The lecture deals with civil society's capacity to act in autocratic and democratic contexts and examines their contribution to the transition to democracy and its consolidation.
