MARKOPOLO at the IWPP5
07/10/2026From July 6-8, 2026, MARKOPOLO members Ulrike Zeigermann and Christoph Mohamad-Klotzbach (both JMU Würzburg) participated at the 5th International Workshop on Public Policy (IWPP) of the International Public Policy Association (IPPA) in Ottawa.
Zeigermann und Mohamad-Klotzbach took part in the Workshop “Wicked Problems and Evidence-Based Policy”, organized by Sabrina Krischke (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and Brian Head (University of Queensland, Australia), in which they presented a study on “Boundary spanning in Environmental Health”. In the study, they offered an expanded theoretical framework for studying Science-Policy-Interfaces and attempts to classify boundary spanning phenomena in Environmental Health. Additionally, preliminary results of qualitative data collected via semi-structured expert interviews that showed empirical evidence for several boundary spanning phenomena were discussed with the participants of the workshop.
Since the Workshop was not only focusing on the topic of “wicked problems” in general but also included sessions on environmental and health topics as being seen as wicked problems, the research of MARKOPOLO fitted perfectly in this workshop, in which international experts on these topics took part. The discussions of the workshop showed how much potential in both theoretical and empirical research lies in this research field.
