WüMUN · 1. Würzburg Model United Nations · 9/10 May 2025

On May 9 and 10, 2025, 74 students from Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and 18 students from five schools in Würzburg and Aschaffenburg simulated negotiations in the organs of the United Nations (Security Council, General Assembly and UNESCO). After two days of intensive debate and negotiations, all four committees were able to pass resolutions in which the problems were addressed with interesting solutions. The negotiations were characterized by great seriousness and a willingness to engage in fair diplomatic debate.

Following the negotiations, the respective committee chairs led a detailed substantive and personal reflection in which the participants reflected, among other things, on how well they were able to represent the interests of their own country, what helped them to remain credible and convincing as delegates, and which negotiation strategies led to success. From this, the participants were able to take away insights for real negotiations or discussions and make resolutions for themselves for the next negotiation situation.

The negotiations were organized in four committees. The Security Council (in English, Committee 1) negotiated on the topic of “Climate, Peace and Security”. The Security Council (in German, Committee 2) negotiated on the same topic, “Climate, Peace and Security”. The General Assembly (in German, Committee 3) discussed the topic “Promotion of Nuclear Disarmament and International Security”, and UNESCO (in German, Committee 4) dealt with the topic “Protection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Conflict Areas”.

The 1st Würzburg Model United Nations (WüMUN) simulation was aimed at students at the University of Würzburg and advanced pupils. It was organized by the Chair of International Relations and European Studies and took place in the university building on Wittelsbacherplatz.
