Book Discussion on “The Climate Warriors: Ideas for Saving the Global Climate”

As part of the Forum Sustainability event series, the third event for the 2026 summer term, focusing on the overreaching theme of "Local sustainability policy", took place on July 1st, 2026. During the event, Marc Engelhardt (Weltreporter), Dr. Christoph Mohamad-Klotzbach (Chair of Social Science Sustainability Research) and master’s students from the SowiNa seminar “Governance of Sustainability” as well as other interested participants discussed the book “The Climate Warriors: Ideas for Saving the Global Climate”.
Following a brief introduction Mohamad-Klotzbach, the book’s editor Marc Engelhardt offered a brief overview of the book’s origins and motivations. The initial point was the often seemingly hopeless coverage of the climate crisis and its negative framing. The authors asked themselves which global issues affect (almost) all countries at various levels and ultimately focused on climate change and the associated “climate depression”. For the book, they spoke with 25 people who refused to be discouraged by negative news but instead view climate change as a challenge and have developed creative solutions for more sustainability.
Engelhardt highlighted five of these individuals who had inspired him: Pablo López Alavé (Mexico), who campaigned against deforestation and was imprisoned for it; Dominic Wanjihia (Kenya) with his biogas plant company; Florence Nishida (California, USA), who established an urban community garden; Mireia Barba (Catalonia, Spain), whose company carries on the tradition of gleaning to make use of leftovers; and Felix Keller (Switzerland) with his project to combat glacial melt. For Marc Engelhardt, these examples symbolize greater appreciation as well as joy and motivation in addressing the climate crisis.
Afterward, students from the master’s seminar “Governance of Sustainability: Actors, Politics and Policy” and other interested participants discussed the book’s ideas and journalistic approaches to the topic of climate change with Marc Engelhardt.

The events will be organized in interdisciplinary cooperation with the Chair of Social Science Sustainability Research, the Department of Political Theory, the Chair of International Relations and European Studies, the Chair of Public Law and International Economic Law, Chair of Human Geography and the WueLAB.
