IPS members at the ECPR Joint Sessions 2025 at Charles University in Prague
06/08/2025As part of the HE-funded project EMBRACE, Prof. Dr. Sonja Grimm co-chaired the workshop: “External Influences on Democratization and Autocratization: How Donor Competition Shapes Democracy, Corruption and Development in Recipient Countries” together with Dr. Adea Gafuri, The Swedish Institute of Foreign Affairs, Stockholm at the ECPR Joint Sessions, 23-25 May 2025 at Charles University Prague.
The participants of the workshop discussed the role of traditional and non-traditional donors in target countries of development cooperation and democracy promotion. In particular, they reflected on developments in post-conflict countries, in the European neighborhood and in the post-Soviet space. They focused on different donor policies and their effects on statehood and the quality of democracy, on the need to adapt donor policies in the light of global regime competition and on the perceptiona of local populations and stakeholders in the face of competing donor offers. A total of 17 contributions were discussed in depth. The workshop also provided an opportunity to continue the academic discourse between the sister projects EMBRACE, REDEMOS and SHADEM-EU.
The ECPR Joint Sessions take place once a year at one of the member institutions of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) and host 30-40 workshops that take place simultaneously over three conference days. This year, a total of almost 600 scientists at all career levels took part in the workshops.
In addition to Sonja Grimm, Nea Solander, Steve Biedermann and Elena Dück from the IPS also presented current research findings. Wicke van der Broeck and Giselle Bosse from Maastricht University, and Karina Shyrokykh, Stockholm University, all EMBRACE members, also took part.
